Street Musician
The Street Musician, or Buskers, is a detail of a mosaic of Cicero’s mansion in Pompei, dating back to 100 B.C. Now it is preserved at the national museum of Napoli.
It is a very beautiful part of a bigger mosaic, depicting a musician playing a type of tamburine, still used in Napoli.
The surface is irregular like some antique art pieces (see details in this product’s photos).
The mosaic is an antique technique, the image is made of small colored tiles. It was particularly popular in ancient Roman and Greek houses, but the first findings date back to 3dr millennium BC in Mesopotamia. This art flourished in the Byzantine Empire and became widespread also in the western world, particularly in Sicily and Venice.
In the middle-east, it was popular in early Islamic buildings, but after the 8th-century figurative patterns fell out of fashion, and left room for the development of geometric patterns.
