Sculpture of Poseidon/Neptune with Trident
Stunning Antique Antimony Sculpture, handmade in Italy in the mid-1900s.
The Greek God Poseidon (the Neptune of the Roman tradition) was equal to Jupiter by birth and dignity, but he had been given the dominion over the waters, while Jupiter was the King of the Gods.
He inhabited the bottom of the sea and commanded marine animals, currents, earthquakes and storms.
In Homer‘s tales Poseidon became lord of the sea after the defeat of his father Cronos. They devided the world among the three sons: Zeus controlled the heavens, Hades the Underworld and poseidon the seas.
Following the defeat of his father Cronus, they divided the world among his three sons; Zeus became the God of the sky, Hades of the underworld, and Poseidon of the sea, with the Earth and Mount Olympus belonging to all three.
In the sculpture he stands in a position of attack with the trident, in order to emphasize his dominance on a composition made of mermaids, dolphins and horses, all submissive at his feet.
